The Barrel Never Lies
5-Gallon All-Grain Homebrew Recipe
THE CHARACTER
Fernando De Gerste is the eccentric chief botanist of Ward Manor, overseeing the sprawling, steam-heated Victorian glasshouse—a tropical sanctuary built to house specimens acquired during the Commodore's naval campaigns. While the valley outside endures the damp chill of a Hearthcombe autumn, Fernando thrives in the heavy, humid life of the conservatory, cultivating brilliant citrus and mangoes year-round. This Mango Blonde Ale is his masterpiece. Crisp, vibrant, and bursting with tropical voltage, it is an American-style blonde ale that proves Duffy & Ward is capable of looking beyond the traditional English countryside.
THE STYLE
Fruit beers require a delicate balancing act. The base beer must be clean and unassertive enough to let the fruit shine, but structured enough that the final product still tastes like beer, not juice. An American Blonde Ale is the perfect canvas: light malt character, crisp fermentation, and just enough hop presence to dry out the finish. The mango is added during secondary fermentation, meaning the yeast consumes the fruit sugars, leaving behind the brilliant tropical aroma and flavor without heavy, cloying sweetness.
